Jeffrey A. Mattes, MD

Published: October 31, 2008

Article Abstract

Because this piece has no abstract, we have provided for your benefit the first 3 sentences of the full text.

Sir: The article by Meltzer and colleagues1 suggestingthat high-dose olanzapine may be equivalent to clozapine intreatment-resistant schizophrenics warrants some discussion.

The authors’ power analysis suggested that 17 patients pergroup would be sufficient to provide 80% power. However, thepower analysis (as is often the case) did not consider dropouts, and this was a particular concern in this study since 6 of 21 patientsreceiving clozapine dropped out prior to 6 weeks.’ ‹
