Marlene P. Freeman, MD, is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She is the Associate Director of the Center for Women’s Mental Health at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Abra Prentice Foundation Chair in Women’s Mental Health at MGH. She is the Medical Director of the Clinical Trials Network and Institute at MGH.

Dr Freeman completed medical school at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, residency at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program in Boston, and a research fellowship in the Biological Psychiatry Program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Dr Freeman is the Editor in Chief for The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

Joseph F. Goldberg, MD

Joseph F. Goldberg, MD, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He attended college at the University of Chicago, graduate school in neuroscience at the University of Illinois, and medical school at Northwestern University. He completed his residency and chief residency in psychiatry, and fellowship in psychopharmacology, at the Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he later served on the faculty and was site Principal Investigator at Weill-Cornell Medical Center for the NIMH STEP-BD program.

Dr Goldberg has published over 220 peer-reviewed papers on topics related mainly to the treatment and clinical features of bipolar disorder, as well as 4 books on bipolar disorder and psychopharmacology, most recently, Practical Psychopharmacology: Translating Findings From Evidence-Based Trials into Real-World Clinical Practice, published in 2021 by Cambridge University Press.

Dr Goldberg has served on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology and is on the editorial boards for a number of peer-reviewed journals. His research has been awarded funding from NARSAD, NIMH, the Stanley Foundation, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Dr. Goldberg is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has been listed for many years in Best Doctors in America and Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors.

Dr Goldberg also serves as the Section Editor for JCP’s Early Career Psychiatrists section. The objective of this collection is to encourage the academic development of early career psychiatrists. Manuscripts selected for this section will be those deemed through the review process to represent excellent work from the next generation of researchers in psychiatry. John C. Markowitz, MD, is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons and a Research Psychiatrist at New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York City. He trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Payne Whitney Clinic, in cognitive behavioral therapy at the Beck Institute, and in interpersonal psychotherapy with the late Gerald L. Klerman, MD. Dr Markowitz has devoted much of his career to psychotherapy-related research and training.

Rachel C. Vanderkruik, PhD, Focus on Psychotherapy

Rachel C. Vanderkruik, PhD, is a Staff Psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. She completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at University of Colorado Boulder and has been trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). Dr Vanderkruik also has a master’s degree from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and is interested in expanding access to evidence-based psychotherapy.

Drs Markowitz and Vanderkruik are also Section Editors for JCP’s Focus on Psychotherapy section. The objective of this collection is to showcase original research and systematic reviews that advance knowledge of psychotherapies and their efficacy in alleviating suffering. Karen D. Wagner, MD, PhD, Focus on Childhood and Adolescent Mental Health

Karen Dineen Wagner, MD, PhD, is the Titus H. Harris Chair, Harry K. Davis Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Dr Wagner received her medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her doctorate in clinical psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia.  She completed her residency in psychiatry with Harvard Medical School at Beth Israel Hospital and completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry with Harvard Medical School at McLean Hospital.

Dr Wagner is an internationally recognized expert in the pharmacological treatment of childhood mood disorders. Her work has led to the development of evidence-based treatments for children and adolescents with major depression and bipolar disorder.

Dr Wagner is the recipient of numerous honors, including receipt of an Honorary Doctorate from State University of New York; Klerman Senior Investigator Award from Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance; Blanche F. Ittleson Award for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association; Colvin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mood Disorders from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation; and the Mood Disorders Research Award from the American College of Psychiatrists.

Dr Wagner has served in leadership positions in professional organizations and has been a member of the National Advisory Mental Health Council of the National Institutes of Health. She is Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Dr Wagner also serves as the Section Editor for JCP’s Focus on Childhood and Adolescent Mental Health section. Gary W. Small, MD, Focus on Geriatric Psychiatry

Gary W. Small, MD, is Chair of Psychiatry at Hackensack University Medical Center, and Behavioral Health Physician in Chief for Hackensack Meridian Health, Edison, New Jersey. Dr Small was previously Professor of Psychiatry, the Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging, and Director of the Longevity Center at UCLA.

Dr Small was among the team that discovered the major known genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease, APOE-4, and was the first to combine such genetic risk data with neuroimaging findings to assist in the detection of the first signs of brain aging and dementia years before patients show symptoms. He is a co-inventor of the first positron emission tomography scanning method that can provide images in living people of the abnormal brain proteins in Alzheimer’s disease: amyloid plaques and tau tangles. In addition to testing medications and supplements that may benefit cognitive abilities and possibly delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms, Dr Small has studied and developed lifestyle and memory training programs for improving cognition and healthy aging, which have been made available throughout the United States and abroad in senior centers, hospitals, and other community sites.

Dr Small has authored over 500 scientific works and has received numerous awards and honors, including the Weinberg Award for Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association. Scientific American magazine named him one of the world’s top 50 innovators in science and technology. He is the author of 12 popular books on brain health and aging, including The New York Times bestseller, The Memory Bible.

Jordan F. Karp, MD, Focus on Geriatric Psychiatry

Jordan F. Karp, MD, is the Department Chair and Professor of Psychiatry at the College of Medicine, University of Arizona, where he also serves as both Clinical Service Chief for Behavioral Medicine and Medical Director for Behavioral Health Technology at Banner University Medical Center and Group–Tucson. He is expert in the fields of geriatric psychiatry, depression treatment, chronic pain, and suicide prevention. Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Dr Karp served as a professor of psychiatry, anesthesiology, and clinical and translational science at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he directed the Late-Life Depression Prevention and Treatment Research Program, served as Director of Medical Student Mental Health Services, and was program director for the geriatric psychiatry fellowship.

Dr Karp is a prolific author and has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) since 2006.

Dr Karp is committed to providing rapid reviews of submitted manuscripts, selecting only the highest quality psychiatric clinical science for publication, and engaging trainees, early career clinicians, and clinical scientists in the mission and activities of JCP.
