Thirty Great Years

When my dad and I chose Alan Gelenberg to be the Editor of JCP 30 years ago, we saw tremendous promise in this up-and-coming psychiatrist. Little did we realize at the time, though, the remarkable journey we would be embarking on with the talented person who would remain JCP’s Editor in Chief for the next 3 decades.

Alan has been a publisher’s dream of an editor, a person who has devoted his time and effort to molding JCP into the preeminent clinical publication in our specialty. Alan’s day-to-day work with JCP will end this year, and he will assume Editor Emeritus status, a title he has earned with distinction and grace.

During his tenure, Alan has made a lasting imprint on the specialty not only through the pages of JCP but by virtue of his capacity as researcher, author, teacher, and mentor to early career psychiatrists. Many policies of the APA and decisions by the FDA were influenced by Alan’s keen insights and recommendations.

The heart and soul of a journal is shaped by its Editor in Chief. From the beginning of his tenure, Alan understood the importance of providing the most important, clinically relevant, and up-to-date information to our readers, allowing them to better diagnose and treat their patients suffering from mental health disorders. With a knowledgeable eye and a skillful editor’s hand, he has worked with our Section Editors and the Editorial Board members to carefully review and, as needed, guide revision of the hundreds of manuscripts that crossed his desk each year.

One of Alan’s greatest legacies to JCP has been the mentoring of his successor, Marlene Freeman, who has been at Alan’s side guiding JCP for nearly 15 years and will become the Editor in Chief at the turn of the year. Alan leaves JCP in very capable hands.
